The Barcelona Zoo opened in 1892. The collection of animals in the zoowhen it opened came from a private collection owned by wealthy banker Lluís Martí i Codolar who kept the animals at his La Granja Vella estate in the area of Barcelona called Horta. He offered to sell all his animals to Barcelona City council to open a new city zoo.

The mayor Manuel Porcar approved the deal and his collection was moved to the publicly owned site in Ciutadella Park which was empty after being used for the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition. For many years the most famous animal in the Barcelona Zoo was "Floquet de Neu" (Snow Flake) which was a very rara albino gorilla, who lived in Barcelona zoo for many years and became an icon of Barcelona.

Barcelona Zoo is open every day all year.
